The ATLAS Theory Initiative aims to support the research programs of the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System in critical areas, including:
- Maximizing the discovery potential of the current facility
- Inspiring the conception of new and innovative experiments
- Aiding in the interpretation and deepening of insights derived from new results
- Establishing the fundamental physics framework for large-scale capabilities, upgrades, and even envisioning entirely new facilities.
The centerpiece of the ATLAS Theory Initiative is the establishment of a visitor and sabbatical program designed to foster collaboration between nuclear theorists and ATLAS experimentalists, particularly focusing on nuclear structure and reactions, nuclear astrophysics, and fundamental symmetries. Bringing nuclear theorists from academic and research institutions worldwide to the Laboratory will tremendously enhance the success of ATLAS, as it allows theorists and experimentalists to work closely together in the same location.
Additionally, the ATLAS Theory Initiative plans informal weekly meetings between theorists and ATLAS experimentalists, to help foster a fertile and vibrant research environment.
