Thank you to the directors, lecturers, students, and organizers of EBSS 2024! We will see you next year in Berkeley!

Hands-on Activities

Students at the 2019 EBSS work on liquid scintillator

Information about the hands-on activities for 2024 EBSS at ATLAS is below.

HELIOS:  Participants will be engaged in particle detection using the HELical Orbit Spectrometer (kinematics/source hands-on activities with HELIOS).

CARIBU:  Participants will extract and tune a beam of radioactive ions from CARIBU and use the MRTOF (Multi Reflection-Time Of Flight) system to measure the masses of the ions.

AGFA:  Participants will identify various alpha and proton activities and decay times of implanted ions on the implantation-decay station using an ATLAS beam with AGFA.

ION BUNCHING IN AREA 1:  Participants will optimize the capture and bunching of an ion beam in a RFQ (radiofrequency quadrupole) ion buncher and examine the time of flight of the extracted pulsed beam.

CATS:  Participants will be engaged in making targets of thin gold foils using an evaporation technique.

MUSIC:  Participants will be involved in setting the parameters of MUSIC needed to detect nuclei from a source.

ECR:  Participants will explore one of the Electron Cyclotron Resonance sources at ATLAS and will learn the techniques of optimizing ion beam production.
